Chapter Twelve
Despite being told by the receptionist that I would be waiting a very long time to be seen by the triage nurse, I wait barely fifteen minutes. Iâm extremely surprised by this and can only assume that the kerfuffle caused by Frankieâs fans has played a part in the decision to fast track me.
Once in the waiting area, Frankie is surrounded by people asking for his autograph, people, who, to be frank, donât have any apparent injuries or appear to be medical emergencies. God only knows why they would want to spend their time at the Accident and Emergency Department at such an early hour on a Sunday morning. I do wonder if the majority of the people are here for a bit of an outing. I exclude myself from that generalisation, obviously.
The low hubbub of chatting that was apparent when we arrived has been replaced by people almost shouting in their attempts to be noticed by Frankie. When the receptionist saunters over to request everyone to quieten down no one pays her the slightest attention. I watch from my wheelchair as she stomps off and speaks to the security guard slouched against the wall studying his mobile phone. He glances over at the crowd with complete disinterest and only after a lot of pointing and annoyed arm movements from the receptionist does he detach himself from the wall and saunter over to repeat the request to calm down.
His request is also completely ignored and he slouches back to the desk and speaks to the receptionist. She picks up the telephone receiver and from her vexed expression and non-stop talking I assume that sheâs having a heated conversation with someone on the other end of the telephone. No doubt all of the noise is disturbing her magazine reading.
I am just returning from a traumatic trip to the lavatory when a nurse bursts through the double swing doors and calls my name, although she has to do it several times to be heard over the noise. Fortunately I see her standing there and can just about hear my name as Iâm wheeling myself back towards Frankie. Disabled toilets are all very well but I think it would be a good idea to ask someone who is actually in a wheelchair to try them out. True, the wheelchair I am in is extremely cumbersome and heavy but if it wasnât for my excellent upper arm strength (due to my regular swimming) it would have been nigh on impossible to open the door to the lavatory let alone use the facilities. The less said about the actual mechanics of positioning oneself on the lavatory, the better.
On the perimeter of the crowd of fans and unable to attract Frankieâs attention, I start to wheel myself towards the triage nurse. Frankie must have spotted me or heard the nurse call my name because he has somehow managed to extricate himself from the melee and appears beside me, rather out of breath. He grabs the
